He studied at the Mayo School of Art, Lahore, and the J. I. School of Art Bombay. Between 1952-54, he worked under Sequieros at Palacio Nazionale de Bellas Artes in Mexico. Returning home, he became one of the most versatile artists, working with paint and paper collage, clay, ceramic, wood, metal and glass. He has also designed murals and worked as an architect. His most famous commission is the Belgian Embassy, New Delhi. He has had one-man shows in almost every major city and has participated in several important international exhibitions including "Contemporary Art: A Dialogue Between East and West", National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (1969), "Pictorial Space', Lalit Kala Academi, New Delhi (1977), "India: myth and reality" at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1982), "Contemporary Indian Art", Royal Academy of Arts, London (1982). His work has been presented at the Biennials of Venice, Tokyo and Sao Paulo. He was awarded the Order of the Crown from Belgium for his achievements in Architecture. Kumar Gallery, New Delhi exhibited his work since 1955 and in 1990 sponsored his show of ICONS at New Delhi and the Birla Academy Calcutta.
