He has held over 35 solo exhibitions in India and abroad with retrospective of his work being held at the Birla Museum, Calcutta (1980), and the Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal (1986). He has also participated in group shows in New York (1959 and 1962), Sao Paulo (1959, Biennial) Prague (1966), Paris (1985) and elsewhere. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 and his work is featured in the major public collections of India, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Calcutta, as well as Ford Foundation, New Delhi, the National Museums of Prague and Berlin, the Grey Foundation, Washington and the Henry Abram Collection, New York. Kumar is also an award-winning short story writer in Hindi with five collections, published to-date. His one-man shows were at the Kumar Gallery, New Delhi between 1959 & 1965.
