Born in Orissa, he was trained at the J.J. School of Art, Bombay, where he graduated with honours in 1962. He was invited to Delhi by the Kumar Gallery in 1965 and his one man shows at Delhi were held by them till 1979. He has represented India at the Paris Biennale 1971 as well as the Venice Biennale 1998. He was the recipient of the Governor's Award in 1965 and more recently the Bharat Bhawan Award in 1992.
