Francis Newton Souza was born in Goa, India in 1924. He studied at the J. J. School of Art, Bombay; Central School of Art, London; Ecole des Beaux Art, Paris. His major works upto 1962 are reproduced in a monograph: Souza by Edwin Mullins. He has had numerous shows in India (first being at the Kumar Gallery, New Delhi) Europe and America, and retrospective exhibitions in London 1951, New Delhi 1965; and Detroit 1968. Minneapolis International Art Festival, 1972 Karachi, 75,89,92; New Delhi and Bombay, 1972; Festival of Indian Exhibits, Museum of Modern Arts Oxford and R. A. 1982; East-West visual Arts Encounter, 1985 (organised by Federal Republic of Germany) Bombay. His published writings include articles in Encounter magazine, Studio International, Art News and Review, Illustrated Weekly of India and an autobiography, Words and Lines, (1959). The White Flag Revolution, 1982 New Poems, 1985; Portrait of the Artist published in Art News & Review, Tate Gallery, London, 1990; The Other Story, Hayward Gallery,. London, 1989, 90. He founded the Progressive Artists Group in 1947. Souza won the Italian government scholarship, Guggenheim Award, the Hohn Moore's (Liverpool) prize and Bombay Art Society prizes. He is listed in Who's Who International, and Art & Antiques. His paintings are in the Baroda Museum, Baroda, National Gallery , New Delhi; Tate Gallery, London; Wakefield Gallery, Wakefield; Haifa Museum,Israel; National Gallery, Melbourne. He now lives in New York, U.S.A. |
