He studied at the College of Art and Craft in Calcutta. He held over 38 one-man shows in India and abroad and he was awarded in 1956 the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award and in 1989 Dasgupta was made fellow of the Akademi. His work was included in the Biennial of Sao Paulo in 1965 and in several of the India Triennales. Many of his major works are in the collection of the Kumar Gallery, New Delhi. He died in an accident in July 1995.
